It is one of the most celebrated songs of a generation, sampled many times by other artists, used in countless movies and TV shows worldwide and sound tracked the lives of millions through ongoing global airplay.
On April 26th, 1983, True, one of Spandau Ballet’s most famous songs, reached Number 1 in the UK Charts and it will be celebrated by the re release of the Special Edition album pack, and an iTunes digital eclxusive with two previously unheard demos.
True has transcended its 1983 Number 1 status and even its 4 million plays on US radio alone, for which composer Gary Kemp won a prestigious BMI Award in 2011. The song has become a standard in all senses of the word.
The song itself is a Marvin Gaye inspired neo soul classic, with lyrics of unrequited love. But it was central to so many fans’ lives and was to the 1980s what Adele’s Someone Like You was to recent times, destined to be played in good times and bad, at first dances and final goodbyes.
True’s use in John Hughes’ celebrated 1984 movie debut Sixteen Candles, silkily accompanying a high school slow dance, ensured its place in Hollywood history and reflected a million real life experiences at the time. Since then it has been famously sampled for PM Dawn’s 1991 global hit Set Adrift On Memory Bliss and become a staple for US R&B royalty with everyone from Nelly to Lloyd, Akon, Backstreet Boys and Black Eyed Peas either sampling or covering the song.
It has featured in a myriad of movies, TV shows and adverts. Anyone switching on a television in France in recent months will have heard it over the new Citreon car promo.
To the band, True hitting Number 1, was a cause for huge celebration in an age when pop stars did not party by halves. A boat was hired on the Thames and a who’s who of 80s music and style icons turned up to help celebrate. Their Top of the Pops performance was the Number 1 slot on the iconic show’s 1000th episode and Spandau played a triumphantly seminal homecoming gig at London’s Sadlers Wells.
The album of the same name was originally released in March 1983 and featured top hits such as Gold, True, Communication and Lifeline. The 2 CD Special Editionversion will be re-released by EMI on April 29. True was the band’s first number one album. The original version features as CD1 in this collection. CD2 is made up of fantastic bonus material, including ten different mixes of the singles (five of which are appearing on CD for the first time) and four previously unreleased live tracks recorded at Sadlers Wells on May 1st 1983. The entire show from that evening is also presented here on DVD, alongside five contemporary Top Of The Pops performances and a mini-documentary entitled ‘True: The Making Of The Album’.
In addition, the band have unearthed two demos, previously thought lost, of songs on the True album. One for Heaven Is A Secret and the other a version of Code Of Love which will be available with the digital version of the album.
And to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the groundbreaking single True, the band’s first App will be released April 26th. Free to fans, it will feature music videos, the latest news and much more. The app wll initially be released via iTunes and shortly afterwards on Blackberry and Android platforms.
Looking ahead, next year there will be the release of a major documentary film, the full story of their life and times. Soul Boys of the Western World will be the band’s first foray onto the big screen and will highlight the lives of the 5 North London boys as they bought their ticket to the world and became one of the biggest UK bands. The poster artwork for the movie has just been released here: www.spandauballet.com
Spandau also announce the publication of a major book in 2014 from Genesis Publications, chronicling an incredible rise that spanned the 1980s and set the agenda for the decade. They will become the first artists of the era to be granted such a major cultural retrospective, firmly establishing them as the band that built the 80s. More information at www.spandauballetbook.com
