One of the most influential guitarists in the world is Jeff Beck. Hailing from Wallington, England, he has made an amazing career out of his remarkable talent. At the start of his music career, Jeff was a member of The Yardbirds, replacing Eric Clapton as the lead guitarist in 1965. He later formed The Jeff Beck Group in 1967, as well as Beck, Bogart & Appice in 1971.
His passion for music started at a very early age, as his mother played the piano and made sure that he was exposed to all kinds of music genres. This had a great impact on his childhood that has helped form him into the musician that he is today. Beck says, “For my parents, who lived through the war, music was a source of comfort to them. Life was tense and music helped them forget about their troubles. I’m sure that made an impact on me.”
Most of Beck’s work is instrumental, and his art is evident in a wide array of genres including rock, jazz-fusion, blues, and even heavy metal. He has appeared on albums by several different musicians such as ZZ Top, Stevie Wonder, Les Paul and Mick Jagger, just to name a few.
Beck was nominated for seven Grammy Awards this year; and won three for “Best Rock Instrumental Performance” for “Hammerhead”, Emotion & Commotion (he holds the record for the most wins, with six, for this category); “Best Pop Instrumental Performance” for “Nessun Dorma”, Emotion & Commotion; and “Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals” for a performance of John Lennon’s “Imagine”. He won this last category alongside Herbie Hancock, Pink, India.Arie, Seal, Konono No 1 and Oumou Sangare. Among the list of his many successes include being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a solo artist, on April 4, 2009. He was also inducted as a member of The Yardbirds in 1992.
